horse problems farrier"The habit she has is leaning very heavily on the farrier/vet/me when she needs her feet seeing to. She's quite happy to pick them up but then feels she has to lean her whole weight on the one foot being held."

This horse problem is surprisingly easy to fix. In a nutshell it goes like this. Don't give the horse anything to lean on. No butt, no elbow, no shoulder, no thigh, no part of your body. Don't be standing so close that you're in constant contact. By the same token, don't stand so far away that it's an unnatural stretch for your horse either. This should take care of most attempts to lean.

And if the horse still tries anyway? Let her lean a bit and a bit more and hold her weight like you're going to be there as her fourth leg convenience (don't put your back out doing this). And then bam! Drop her hoof. A few goes of this and she'll get the idea that if she wants to stay standing (and she does), she better hold herself up on 3 legs.

I had a New Forest Pony that used to lean on me all the time. Untill one day I let the pony lean on me untill he leaned so close to the floor he roled over.

He never leaned again.

Bless him. *RIP*

LOL! thats good advice/tip! i'll definitely keep that in mind for the other horses at my barn! my Morab mare doesn't lean unless I'm stretching her leg after the girth has been tightened... and she doesn't always lean, and when she does, it's not too horrible!

my 3 year old is not letting me hold his hoof, he lets me for a couple of seconds then pulls away so hard, almost a kick. the farrier hit him and now he is worse for me to even clean his hoof.

the horse used to be ok but he is almost impossible to trim now???
HELP!

I used to have one that was horrible to clean the rear feet and of course to shoe. One day, he made me so mad that I lunged him until his tounge was almost hanging out (mine too). He was fine for a while after that. I did have a couple of farriers hit them on the butt when he tried to kick. That either frightened him or pissed him off, not sure which, but the result was the same. The best results and longest lasting was from using a bridle/headstall that had a wood cube with the halter cord running through it. There were wood cubes on the side of his face and at the pole. Put him in an enclosed round pen and jerked it everytime he misbehaved. He licked his lips and got nice after 15-20 minutes. However, this only lasted for 5-6 months and he went back to his old ways. I traded him off for a good horse.

I had a problem with my 3yr old bowing down....I just backed him up every time he did not respond correcttly. The farrier did this to and now he does great.
good luck
